On behalf of all of the members, I welcome you to the home page of the Christian Church of Woodland. We are a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination of some 4,000 churches and 1 million members across the United States and Canada. We are considered one of the "mainline" denominations which include such churches as the United Presbyterians, United Methodists, American Baptists, Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the United Church of Christ. We are a church of about 175 active members, and average about 95 persons in worship each Sunday.
Our congregation is 153 years old dating back to the very beginnings of the city of Woodland. Education was an important emphasis of the church early in its history as it founded a college, known as Hesperian College, in 1861. It served as the main institution of secondary education in Woodland until public schools were opened int the late 1880s. In our congregation we continue to emphasize the ministry of learning, providing Sunday school classes, adult Bible studies, and weekly youth groups for all ages. A well-reasoned, thoughtful faith is important in our church.
We also stress the importance of sharing the good news of the love and grace of God given to us in Jesus Christ. We are now involved in a program called "Taking the Way of Jesus" which emphasizes spiritual growth and sharing our faith with friends and neighbors.
We seek to be a serving church, reaching out to people in need in our community. Church members serve the evening meal each Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. at the Yolo Wayfarer Center (Christian Mission) which is a ministry to homeless and low income persons and families. Our building houses the Woodland Food Closet which provides food to hundreds of persons each month. We also provide office space in our newly renovated building for Yolo County Habitat for Humanity, a Christian organization which builds homes for low income persons.
Please take the time to browse though our home page. You will find an affirmation of faith which expresses some basic beliefs of the church, a calendar of upcoming events, pictures of church folk involved in church activities, and a short history of our congregation. If you are looking for a church home, we invite you to visit us for worship on any Sunday. Worship and Children's Sunday School start at 10:00 a.m. Sunday School starts in the sancturary during worship leaving for classes after the children's moment. And if ever we can be of service in any way or if you would like more information about the church, please call me at the church office, 530-662-9356.
